Many people are well aware of the damage that sunlight (UV) can do to someone’s skin, however the majority of people have not been educated well enough about the importance of UV protection for your eyes. Overexposure to UV rays has been linked to a number of issues, including cataracts, macular degeneration, abnormal growths on the eye’s surface and sunburn of the eyes. These conditions can cause blurred vision, irritation, redness, tearing, temporary vision loss and, in some instances, blindness.
Damage to the eyes from UV exposure is a cumulative effect. In fact, the majority of the damage to your eyes from UV happens before you turn 18 years old! This is because they have larger pupils, clearer lenses, spend more time outdoors, few wear sunglasses or hats. It is extremely important that parents recognize this and take measures to prevent this damage from occurring. UV damage can NOT be reversed.
Sunglasses are the single most important way to block out UV. But not all sunglasses are made the same. Many sunglasses especially the lower cost sunglasses have UV protection, however, often times these sunglasses only offer some UV protection not full protection. You want to be sure that sunglasses have 100% UV-A and UV-B protection. Also, oftentimes, inexpensive glasses have imperfections that can cause major distortions.
When shopping for new sunglasses, you can sure that all of our sunglasses at Opal Optometry have 100% UV protection. We carry brand names such as Maui Jim, Ray Ban, Prada, Prodesign, Oakley, Kaenon and many more.
