Opal Optometry opened in New Westminster, BC in December 2014. It is owned and operated by Dr. Charn Toor, a family man who’s committed to providing personalized optometry services, the most up-to-date technology, and a wide choice of products to individuals and families in the community he calls home.
Dr. Toor chose the name Opal for its connection to health and to his family. In many world cultures and in the middle ages, the Opal Stone (or Eye Stone) was thought to have healing powers, particularly to strengthen eyesight and even cure certain eye conditions. It is also the birth stone for October, the month that Dr. Toor’s daughter and his grandmother were born.
Dr. Charn Toor was born and raised in Burnaby, BC. He graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and Immunology in 2005. He continued his education, graduating from the University of Waterloo, School of Optometry with honours in 2010.
Dr. Toor then returned home to BC and has been working locally in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley, gaining a wealth of experience - including providing eye care services for the Vancouver Canucks (his favourite team!) and the Vancouver Giants while growing his practice.
Dr. Toor is an avid sports fan. He plays competitive ball hockey and enjoys golf. Most of all, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Jody, and his daughter, Nya.
Margaret has been in the optical industry for almost 30 years! She has called Opal Optometry home for the last two and we’re very lucky to have her. As office manager she keeps our practice running smoothly and helps give professional advice to those that need it.
As a licensed optician in both Canada and the US she excels in finding glasses that suit our patients. Her favourite part of her job is seeing the smiling faces of people who feel confident in their new frames.
In her spare time, she collects books and loves to travel. You can find her trying new things in the kitchen or researching a new place to discover.
Sandra has been with Opal Optometric for the past year as our optometric assistant. She took an interest in the optical industry when her two kids grew up. She quickly developed a passion for the trade and learned as much as she could!
Since her enthusiasm brought her to optical she has become proficient in contact lens training, eyeglass repairs, and lens edging. She also helps the office with staff organization and troubleshooting. Sandra’s favourite part of Opal Optometry is working with such a wonderful staff and patients.
Not only bitten by the optical bug, Sandra loves to travel. She has a big heart with a soft spot for any animal and adores Maui Jim sunglasses.
Optician and Office Manager
Opal Optometry is located near 6th Avenue and 6th Street in Uptown New Westminster, BC. We are half a block away from Royal City Centre.
Our office was formerly an optical store owned by the well-known and respected Doug Pavan, who sadly passed away in 2012. From 2012 to 2014, the store was run by Bullock’s Optical before Dr. Toor converted it into a full-service optometry office, which now operates as Opal Optometry. To honour Doug Pavan’s memory, Opal Optometry keeps a plaque by the front desk.
Opal Optometry has built strong relationships and works closely with local family doctors and ophthalmologists. We are a trusted resource for local eye emergency cases and vision-related issues.
We also believe in giving back to the community and are involved in local activities and events. We are a proud sponsor of our local high school football team - the New Westminster Hyacks - and are a member of the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce.
