Are you interested in getting laser eye surgery? Start with Opal Optometry. Your Laser Eye Surgery Options: PRK, LASIK, and LASEK

Thanks to advancements in technology over the years, you have options when it comes to laser eye treatment. In all cases, a surgeon uses a laser device to make permanent changes to the shape of your cornea, correcting mild to moderate refractive errors.

The following is a general overview of the main procedures that are available to you. Dr. Toor at Opal Optometry can make a specific recommendation based on your eye exam.

  • Photo-Refractive Keractectomy (PRK)
  • The surgeon removes the epithelium (front) layer of your eye and uses a laser to reshape the cornea to correct your vision. A bandage contact lens is worn for a few days while a new epithelial layer naturally heals.
  • Recovery time is approximately one week

The most common form of laser corrective surgery in Canada.

  • Laser Assisted in situ Keratomileusis (LASIK)
  • The surgeon cuts a small flap in the epithelial layer and uses a laser on the underlying cornea to reshape it and fix the refractive error. The flap is then replaced.
  • Recovery time is generally less than a week
  • Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis (LASEK) - a variation of PRK and LASIK
  • The surgeon cuts a thin plug-shaped flap from the epithelium layer, then applies the laser to the underlying cornea to correct the refractive error. The plug flap is replaced at the end of the procedure and a bandage contact lens is used to aid healing.
  • Recovery time is approximately one week
